Lakeview was first developed on drained swampland and is bordered by water on three sides. Lakeview was once a neighborhood of framed cottages, brick ranch houses and bungalows and now includes contemporary, modern, and traditional new construction homes built after Hurricane Katrina.
Its boundaries are West End Boulevard, Robert E. Lee Boulevard, Orleans Avenue and I-610. It is adjacent to City Park and Bayou St. John.
Lakeview was one of the most damaged areas of New Orleans following the largest levee failure after Hurricane Katrina at the 17th Street Canal. It lost much of its original housing stock, but residents quickly rebuilt. The area has experienced a renaissance and is once again a flourishing community. On Harrison Avenue, restaurants, cafes, businesses and shops are thriving. The Harrison Avenue Marketplace is held monthly throughout the spring and fall where residents enjoy local food, handmade crafts, music and children's activities.
Always civic-minded, the Lakeview Civic Improvement Association has been a strong advocate for the community and played a important role in reviving this family-oriented neighborhood, its parks, green spaces and commercial corridors.
